Intel and AMD team up against Nvidia to produce a new laptop chip

Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have teamed up to produce a laptop that uses an Intel processor and AMD graphics. The partnership will pit the two companies against rival Nvidia. The new chip will be designed for laptops designed to be thin and portable, yet powerful enough for gamers who need a more powerful option for high-resolution gaming. It will be part of the 8th-generation Intel Core lineup and will mark the first partnership between Intel and AMD since the 1980s.

Laptops built with the new chips will not compete with AMD Ryzen chips, which are also designed for ultra-thin laptops and are scheduled to launch later this year.

Intel says this is the first consumer product to use the EMIB small intelligent bridge, which enables fast data transfer in «very close proximity.» The bridge allows chips to be smaller and more powerful. The new chip will use HBM2 and can be used in devices including laptops, 2-in-1s, and mini-desktops.
